What Novice Plant Owners Need To Know About Cycads For Sale

By Betty Sullivan

Plants are always a popular addition to a home or office and there are some very good reasons for this. The first is that many plants can help purify the air and make an indoor environment feel much healthier and more relaxed. The other is that they are visually stunning and can be relaxing to look at and care for. If you are interested in some of the more unusual plants you may want to look at one of the many cycads for sale. Here is what you need to know about these plants.

While many plant species are relatively new, cycads are very old. Some specimens are over one thousand years old. This makes this species of plant a great choice for someone who is interested in ancient history as they can have a piece of the past close at hand that they can look at and study.

All cycads have a similar appearance. The leaves form a crown around the top of the central stem. A palm tree is a type of cycad and most members of this plant species have a variation on the classic palm appearance. Some will have stems that are much thicker and the leaves can vary in color and length. If you are planning to add one of these plants to your garden you do need to remember that many of them will get quite large if given enough time.

These plants are capable of growing in some fairly poor conditions and some can even handle salt water. Because some need full sun while others only need partly sunny conditions it is important to know where you will be putting your plant. That way you can pick a species that is more ideally suited to those conditions.

There are a few different ways that you can purchase these plants. One is to find specimens that have been sprouted and potted for you. This is very similar to buying any other type of plant that is available. The other is to purchase a cycad seed and to start the plant off on your own. This can make it more challenging to get your plant started and established.

If you want to try and find different varieties of this type of plant you may want to start your search at reputable nurseries and garden centers. They will be able to offer you healthy, happy seedlings that you can then take home and enjoy. Look for healthy leaves and stalks that are firmly rooted in a pot. This will show you that the specimen has a well-established root system that will help keep it healthy in it's new home.

One clear sign of a healthy plant is the presence of pups. These are what baby plants are called. Depending on the type of plant you have you may find pups at the base although some will produce them all along the length of the trunk.

Before you bring a plant home you will want to find out as much as possible about it's ideal growing conditions and find a place that meets those needs as closely as possible. Look for areas where there is good sun exposure and which are sheltered from drafts. That way you can keep your plant happy and health for years to come.
